WYRD WAR roars back to the big screen at the Hollywood Theatre with a rare 35mm presentation of Enzo Castellari's post-apocalyptic masterpiece 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS, aka 1990: I Guerrieri Del Bronx (1982). Starring Fred Williamson, George Eastman, Vic Morrow, members of the Lower East Side chapter of the Hells Angels and the mysterious Marco Di Gregorio, who boasts one of the most uncomfortably erect postures ever immortalized on film, the true star of this distinctly Italian future dystopia might be the real life urban wasteland of pre-Giuliani New York City. Shot on location in Rome (interior scenes) and the Bronx and Brooklyn (exteriors) at the height of white flight, landlord abandonment, widespread arson, crime and crippling poverty, Castellari's highly stylized mash-up of The Warriors, Escape From New York and The Road Warrior offers a sleazy glimpse into a burnt out America we may never see again. Come for Trash's skin tight jeans and the random five minute jazz drum solo on the banks of the East River...stay for the cabaret inspired tap dancing gang and The Hammer's tiger skin rug! ONE NIGHT ONLY!!!! Tickets on sale HERE!

WYRD WAR welcomes action hero maverick Fred “The Hammer” Williamson to Portland for a rare 35mm screening of his ass kicking pièce de résistance BLACK CAESAR (1973) at the Hollywood Theatre! Tickets on sale NOW!
Discerning genre enthusiasts have come to adore Fred Williamson’s bold screen persona as a thundering reverberation of Sidney Poitier’s iconic smack to the face of American racism…except “The Hammer” strikes with clenched fists! His gritty breakout hit BLACK CAESAR, a remake of Little Caesar (1931), directed by exploitation auteur Larry Cohen, reimagines the pathologically ambitious hoodlum archetype as a swaggering uptown stud who hustles his way up the criminal food chain, wages war on the Mob, and builds a precarious empire of dirty money, bloody revenge, and very bad karma. Boasting an electrifying score by James Brown, BLACK CAESAR is a high-water mark in the cannon of so-called Blaxploitation films that dominated grindhouses throughout the 70s.
Fred Williamson will be in attendance for signings and an audience Q&A following the film. Spend the night with the Godfather of Harlem!
Yikes! We haven't been very good about updating this here news page. Needless to say, we have been very, very busy since our last update and we have finally returned to this page with some exciting news for 2017. Wyrd War very proudly presents the original motion picture soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi’s animated masterwork Wizards on vinyl for the very first time! Ostensibly Bakshi’s “family film,” this almost impossibly PG rated post-apocalyptic “fantasy epic of peace and magic” emerged like a strange fungus through fissures in the Hollywood machine in 1977 to psychedelicize unsuspecting audiences with slouching android assassins, nearly nude fairy wenches, supernatural siblings skirmishing for world domination between slugs of cheap wine, demonic dog soldiers belly-crawling through skeletal landscapes of airbrushed fog, and, perhaps most memorably, terrifying genocidal elfin warfare punctuated with Leni Riefenstahl stock footage, all perfectly choreographed to a beautifully ethereal sci-fi jazz soundtrack seemingly scorched with atomic energy. Such music! Composer Andrew Belling delivered one of the first truly musical scores for a major Hollywood film composed almost entirely for ARP 2500 and ARP 2600 synthesizers, and now it is available on vinyl for the first time! Mastered for vinyl by Timothy Stollenwerk and featuring a massive 11” x 11” gatefold liner notes insert by Dennis Dread with exclusive new interviews with director Ralph Bakshi and composer Andrew Belling.
Release Date: June 21, 2017. Pre-order info coming soon!
Thursday August 25:
DUDES (1987) & THE EARLY SHORT FILMS OF PENELOPE SPHEERIS
IT’S SUMMER! Time to hit the wide-open American highway and follow your bliss to your true purpose…or die trying! Join us for a rare 35mm screening of the obscure cult classic Dudes (1987), followed by a panel discussion with director Penelope Spheeris, screenwriter Randall Jahnson and producer Miguel Tejada-Flores moderated by Wyrd War’s Dennis Dread. Take a trip with Jon Cryer (Pretty in Pink), Daniel Roebuck (River’s Edge) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) as they slam dance their way across the country à la Easy Rider and bang heads with a redneck biker gang led by Lee Ving (FEAR) and infamous punk rock album cover artist “Mad” Marc Rude. Dudes is a hilarious and heartbreaking saga in the American countercultural tradition popularized by Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, boasting a high octane soundtrack featuring W.A.S.P., Jane’s Addiction, The Vandals, The Leather Nun and more! We are delighted to screen the only known 35mm print courtesy of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Moving Image Archives.

Friday August 26th:
SUBURBIA (1983) & THE EARLY SHORT FILMS OF PENELOPE SPHEERIS
We return with a rare 35mm screening of Suburbia (1983)! Produced by exploitation mogul Roger Corman, Suburbia transcends genre to emerge as an almost anthropological study of the early 80s squatter punk movement of southern California. It has since become something of a rite of passage for nearly every disenfranchised adolescent looking to find their tribe beyond the fringes of the smug status quo. Cigarette burns, nose piercings, head-shavings, slam dancing and Manic Panic dying rituals. It’s all here in Penelope’s unintentional “How-To” film that has been lovingly embraced by generations of snarling punks throughout the world, even as it has been condemned by hand-wringing parents and the grimacing Moral Majority. The soundtrack features D.I., The Vandals and T.S.O.L. and, naturally, it rules. We will be screening a beautiful 35mm print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.
THE EARLY SHORT FILMS OF PENELOPE SPHEERIS
Both nights include a very rare screening of the complete short films of Penelope Spheeris, beautifully restored by the Academy Film Archive. The shorts collection is a full 88 minute journey into the creative foundry of one of Hollywood’s living legends. A true renegade badass, Spheeris delivered punk rock kicking and screaming to mainstream consciousness with caustic humor and finely attuned sensitivity. In spite of an industry that is especially unforgiving to its female talent, Spheeris unwaveringly pursued her wild visions over the course of four decades…and came out on top! Produced between 1968 and 1972, with the exception of No Use Walkin’ from 1998, her short films are a dynamic and inspiring way to experience her creative brilliance as a spiritual misfit and “Outsider” insider. We are extremely fortunate to show them both nights with Spheeris in attendance to illuminate the wild visions of bellbottoms, drag queens, crying clowns and born-to-lose margin walkers that cast the die for her now legendary oeuvre. See the world as it will never be again.
7:30pm: Short Films Program w/ Introduction by Penelope Spheeris
Each night is $11…or get tickets to both nights for the special “punk price” of $18! Tickets now available here. We mean it, maaaan.

Bill Moseley, perhaps most widely known as Otis B. Driftwood in The House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil's Rejects (2005), will introduce the film and spin tales of madness and mayhem in a Q&A hosted by Dennis Dread immediately following the screening. Advanced tickets are recommended.

Wyrd War has partnered with one of the most unique roadside attractions in the world to create a truly inspired children's album...for kindred spirits of all ages! Enchanted Forest is the ultimate handcrafted fantasy amusement park, built one bag of cement at a time by visionary Roger Tofte between 1964 and opening day on August 8, 1971, in Turner, Oregon just south of the capital city of Salem. Today, it remains entirely family owned and operated and is the only known amusement park in the U.S. that has never been required to pay royalties for its music. Eldest Tofte daughter, Susan Vaslev, composed and recorded all of the oddly hypnotizing and totally disorienting synth sounds herself at a nearby home recording studio. In celebration of the park's upcoming 45th anniversary, we proudly present Music From Enchanted Forest for the first time on limited edition cyan blue vinyl with liner notes and sounds never before heard beyond the park's wooded gates! To be released just in time for the holidays and absolutely essential for the true wyrdos of the world!
